Twenty years ago, my journey as an obstetrician-gynecologist began. I was a second-year medical student shadowing a family medicine physician, when that doctor was called to the hospital for a patient who was in labor and about to deliver. For the first time, I was blessed to witness the miracle of a new, precious life coming into the world. In that moment, I felt tears spring into my eyes. This was the most powerful thing I had ever seen. Seeing my emotional state, a nurse leaned over to me and said, “Oh honey, if this makes you cry, you need to do this for a living!” I realized she was right. What an honor it would be to care for women and their preborn children – two patients at once -- nurturing life with my patients as they build their families.
